Once upon a time, Spike went for a walk.

While on his walk, he was judged by an ancient alicorn, lodged with griffons, parlayed with air pirates, charmed a maiden of a mystical race, and dealt with the scourges of hate, fear, and racism while deliberately drawing the armies of myriad nations to the brink of global war.

Once upon a time, Spike went for a walk, and did all of this so that he could keep a promise to the one that meant the most to him... Twilight Sparkle.

Now there's a setup.

Also ... I'm not entirely sure why you keep using the word "whelp" for Spike. I understand that it's a legitimate technical term, but it also has negative connotations. In fact, the only use in the show that I can remember was negative ("Thy backside is whole and ungobbled, thou ungrateful WHELP!")

I find that it's only negative if you let it be, and I needed something to denote a juvenile dragon. I tried "pup" once, but that went over poorly.

That seems a little "young" to me. He's really in an odd place. I called him a "fingerling" when he was very small, but he's too old for real "newborn" terms, and too young for "juvenile" terms. Why is fan fiction so hard!:D

Fair enough ... how about "cub"?

Technically, a whelp is also a mammal's offspring.
